You're probably wondering why every time you book your international flights for either promo fare or regular airfare the rates will change once you confirm your booking. This is true for bookings done online, with a travel agent or at the airport. The reason behind this is that Travel Tax is added to your airfare upon issuance of your plane ticket. Here are some good to know information about the Philippine Travel Tax.

What is travel tax?
The travel tax is a levy imposed by the Philippine government on individuals who are leaving the country irrespective of the place where the air ticket is issued and the form or place of payment, as provided for by Presidential Decree (PD) 1183, as amended.
In layman’s terms it is the tax imposed on anyone travelling outside of the Philippines. Depending on the airlines you are booking your ticket with, Travel Tax may or may not be included in the airfares you paid for.

Did you know?
Ø Travel Tax is reduced for Minors (from 2 years and one (1) day to 12th birthday on date of travel). Instead of paying PHP 1,620 , Minors are only charged PHP 810.00.
Ø Privileged Travel Tax is applicable for the following:
a. Legitimate spouse of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW)
b. Unmarried children of an OFW whether legitimate or illegitimate who are below 21 years of age
c. Children of OFWs with disabilities even above 21 years of age
Ø If qualified for Privileged Travel Tax , traveler will only be charged as low as PHP 300.00.

Ø TIEZA certificates are required to avail Reduced Travel Tax and Privileged Travel Tax.

So the next time you book your plane tickets do check if the Philippine Travel Tax has been added to your fare. If not, you will need to prepare PHP 1,620 and settle this at the Philippine Tourism Authority Booth in the airport before departure.
